After relinquishing all the information she had, down to the smallest gossip, Mikki watched as Godric immediately ploughed into his role of Head of the Institute, role model for the younger generation of 'Angel Spawn'. Throw in a cape and a witty catch phrase that ended with "And all for the greater good of the humans." and Mikki would have been literally unable to keep from laughing at how very Super-hero-ish everything had become. Still, the topic of hunting down a coven of vampires never failed to catch her interest, so she successfully suppressed the laugh. The making of a game plan was so much more enticing than figuring out how exactly she was going to apologize to Jasper. She'd figure all that out later.
Somewhere between the start of Godric's verbal thought fest and the conclusion, Mikki had checked out, forming a strategy of her own, the rebel as always. The heavy presence of silence brought her back, the girl, Vanessa, absent from her curled up position on the sofa. Vaguely, Mikki remembered Godric sending her off to go get the boys. Godric had quit his verbal strategizing and was now standing in front of her.
"Miss Downs, I'm going to have to request that you stay here. At least until this vampire situation is handled. I understand you've been taking care of downworlders for a while but if you're going to keep doing it, you're going to have to follow our rules."
Mikki's initial reaction was rage. No surprise there. This was her information, cultivated from hours of hard work, and he was taking it from her, not even letting her participate in the fun of a battle! She had a few choice words set up, but Godric just plowed right on through.
"We will set you up with a room and you'll be allowed to use all the Institute has to offer."
Her mouth opened, ready to shout out her objections, when the weight of his words took effect. All the Institute had to offer, huh? That included the Weapons Room, right? On second thought, maybe she didn't necessarily have to go on the hunt; there would be others. Why break her back over the problem, when there were some completely able Shadowhunters ready to jump in?
"Suit yourself. I can tell when I'm not needed," Mikki said, standing up from the chair and walking to the door. "I'll take the liberty of showing myself around," she called out, the door shutting behind her.

````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Vanessa wracked her sleep-deprived brain for the right path that would lead to the elevator. In the time she'd been at the Institute, she hadn't exactly made it a point to give it a full tour. She knew that a part of her was still stubbornly refusing that she was stuck back behind its walls.
Right. Or is it left? I'm screwed.
Making up her mind to take the left of the two branches she was facing, Vanessa started down the dark hall way, the light from the late morning sun shining in through the sparse, dusty windows. The mindless wandering that she knew she had ahead of her presented her with the perfect opportunity to mull over what exactly had happened downstairs.
She had no idea whether it was the lack of sleep or the effects of something Olivia had given her, but everything had seemed to go in slow-mo. It was better now that she was up and moving, but one of the only things that had seemed clear to her, downstairs, had been the fight. The human had said such awful things to the guy she'd come to know as Jasper, insulting his parents when they were dead. The girl had obviously not known that, heck most in the room hadn't. But still it had been awful. Working in an orphanage, Vanessa had quickly learned how painful even the slightest mention of parents could be to kids who no longer had any. Pretty soon, she was able efforstlessly talk to them about it all, helping soothe the pain with hugs and soft words. She seriously doubted that the same tactics would work on Jasper. She'd probably screw it up somehow, making it all worse. Kids were so easy to deal with.
Finally finding the elevator, Vanessa called it to the floor she was on, jumped in, and pressed the button for the roof top. She'd always enjoyed elevators, especially the last moment, when the elevator came to a stop, and, for the smallest second, it moved down, sending a funny, tingling sensation through her stomach. It was silly, but she'd learned to enjoy the small things in life, no matter how silly.
Having reached the top floor, the elevator doors opened and Vanessa stuck out her arm to keep them from closing again. Noticing the boys only a few feet away, she was startled to see both boys already looking her way. Oliver was even glaring at her. She hadn't done anything to him, had she? For the Angel's sake, she barley knew him!
"Um....Godric told me to come up here and get you guys...he told me it was urgent, I think.....something to do with investigating vampire killings?"
Oh God, she sounded clueless. The last part came out as a question because she honestly couldn't remember the specifics. They probably thought she was some head case. What did that lady give me??
Godric watched as Mikki walked out of the room. "Suit yourself. I can tell when I'm not needed. I'll take the liberty of showing myself around," she called over her shoulder as the door closed. He hadn't wanted to make her think she was unwanted. However he had to admit, her leaving the room would be for the best. He'd rather her not be here when Jasper was in the room. At least not right now.
Heaving a great sigh Godric walked over to the window to look outside. Storms coming in fast he thought as the dark clouds had started moving faster over head. I hope the boys are ready.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Now you’re talking my language, to the weapons room!” Jasper smirked at his friends morbid sense of excitement. "Alright let's go. He replied, flicking his cigarette over the side of the roof. As he did his mind started to wander on the weather. Clouds rolling in. Most likely a downpour like yesterday. Perfect hunting weaher.“ This was how his mind was working right now. Suddenly he was brought back by the elevator arriving on the roof at the same time he heard Oliver mutter, "Shit…” Jasper was really hoping it wasn't Godric. He loved the man, but right now he didn't want to hear the, "You should apologize speech." It was what he expected. That would explain why he was so surprised to see the skinny dark haired girl from downstairs. Vanessa was her name. He'd almost forgotten she was here she'd been so quiet and he was sure she hadn't spoken a word to him or Oliver since arriving. This time however she had something to say, "Um....Godric told me to come up here and get you guys...he told me it was urgent, I think.....something to do with investigating vampire killings?" This is perfect. Those were the first words to pop into Jasper's head at what Vanessa had relayed to them. It was only after he'd played what she said over in his head again that he could see they symptoms of Olivia's healing. He caught it in the way she seemed to ask a question rather than state a fact. He'd been there before so he knew what it felt like. Only with Vanessa it sort of added to her cuteness.
Snapping back to reality Jasper turned to Oliver and shot his friend an evil grin. It felt a little to evil, almost like a hostile excitement. Softening his smile he turned back to Vanessa as he started walking for the elevator with Oliver following, "Thank you for coming to get us. I know it must've been a chore hiking up here. Especially hopped up on Olivia's healing side effects." As he passed Vanessa getting on the elevator he added in a little lighter voice, "Don't worry. It makes you look more adoreable." Noticing a slight blush he couldn't help but feel a little bit happier as the elevator decended. However his happiness was quickly taken over by rage again as the elevator doors opened on the ground floor, and he saw Mikki wandering the halls. He shot her a look sharper than the knives he hunted with as he stalked out of the elevator behind Oliver.
As the girl made her announcement, Olivers expression lightened slightly, forgiving the interruption for the chance of killing some rouge vampires. Returning his friends lethal glance, he followed the others to the elevator, not glancing at Vanessa as they filed in.
"Don't worry. It makes you look more adorable." Oliver made a loud gagging sound that echoed through the elevator, rolling his eyes at Jaspers shameless flirtation. He always found cutsie flirting nauseating. Never having dabbled in relationships with other shadowhunters, he found that kind of flirting useless. With downworlder women, cutsie didn’t get you very far.
Drumming his fingers against his leg anxiously as the pre-battle adrenaline began to pump through his veins, he resisted the urge to jab the down button repeatedly to end this excruciatingly long ride down. When the bell dinged, he jumped through the doors before they had opened fully but froze in the foyer as his silvery gaze fell on Mikki. A wicked smile began to curl at the corners of his lips as he realized she was unaccompanied by an escort. Payback time… He thought excitedly but hesitated as Jasper and Vanessa climbed out of the elevator. Weighing his options silently, hunting vampires sounded like much more fun, and by the look of the way she was meandering the halls he figured the little brat was going to be here awhile.
“Come along, let’s not point and laugh at the silly mundane.” He said, loud enough for the girl to hear as he ushered the other two into the library and shutting the door behind them.
As the words she'd said sank in, Vanessa all but sighed in relief when Oliver's glare faded, replaced by a slightly less startling expression of barely hidden excitement. He turned to Jasper, both boys sharing mirrored expressions of mischievous happiness at the news of a vampire hunt. She'd remembered back in the early days, before the deaths of her family, when a vampire hunt would have sent her racing to get her dagger, energy surging through her. But, now all she felt was an almost paralyzing anxiety. Godric hadn't said specifically that she had to go, but she was a Shadowhunter again and she had ‘obligations’. She barely suppressed a groan, as she watched the boys walk towards the elevator.
"Thank you for coming to get us. I know it must've been a chore hiking up here. Especially hopped up on Olivia's healing side effects," Jasper said sympathetically, entering the small elevator to stand next to her. With him this close, Vanessa was able to notice just how blue his eyes were. Like an ocean in the midst of a storm. From what she'd seen earlier, Jasper himself fit that description quite well; his past a never ceasing storm of pain. Now, there was something she could relate to.
"Don't worry. It makes you look more adorable."
The compliment immediately triggered the dreaded blush, something Vanessa constantly battled; she lost often. Switching her gaze from Jasper's face to her shoes, she was surprised to feel a small smile form at the corners of her mouth. She'd come to accept and even appreciate the fact that she was practically invisible to most people. But, for some reason, the realization that Jasper saw her, even thought her 'adorable', was enough to make her smile, a feat that not many had achieved.
The happy moment was slightly deflated by the gagging sound coming from Oliver. Amplified in the small space, his discontent was hard to ignore, and the smile disappeared once more. But, instead of embarrassment, Vanessa felt the tiniest bit of anger. She hadn't thought much of Oliver when she'd first seen him, and now she thought even less of him.
In the moments following his out burst, Vanessa could have sworn that the trip down took twice as long as it had when she'd first gone up. To say that it was awkward would have been an understatement.
When the metal doors finally opened onto the correct floor, Vanessa felt like racing into the blissfully larger hallway, but controlled herself enough to calmly exit the elevator. Both boys stopped in their tracks, obviously having seen something down a hallway. Looking in the direction of their glares, Vanessa saw the blonde head of the human girl.
“Come along, let’s not point and laugh at the silly mundane," Oliver said, his words projecting his voice down to Mikki, who turned around to shoot him a very inappropriate hand gesture. Shaking her head in wonder at how so much anger could reside in one mundie, Vanessa followed the boys into the library, her anxiety coming back tenfold. Oh, what she wouldn't give to get out of this mission.
Ironically, her salvation came in the form of a slight scratching of nails on wood, signaling the arrival of her dog Mia. The sound stopped abruptly outside the closed door, followed by a low whining. Muttering a short "Excuse me", Vanessa opened the door, letting in a whirlwind of fur. Mia observed the people in the room with an almost human like expression, then turned to her owner and butted her head gently against Vanessa's legs, nudging her in the direction of the door. Trying not to trip over the border collie, the Shadowhunter gladly took the opportunity to escape the debriefing and possibly the hunt itself.
“I think I'll go see what she wants, if that’s okay," She said, not waiting for a reaction from any of the boys or Godric. Exiting out through the door, she followed the swishing tail of her dearest friend, noting that they were heading down the same hall she'd followed coming back from Olivia's healing. Maybe it had been Olivia who had sent Mia to get her. Either way, she was out of the library and couldn't have been more relieved.
(I'm just going to have it implyed that Olivia was the one to send Mia to get Vanessa. She needed Vanessa to stay behind and help sort out some things that the boys might need if they come back injured. I worked this all out with Casey)
(Ok sounds good.)
“Come along, let’s not point and laugh at the silly mundane." He had to admit. Even with how mad he was he felt bad about Oliver's comment. But Japser knew his friend was somewhat sticking up for him so he didn't say anything, just let Oliver usher him and Vanessa into the room. As they entered the room Jasper caught sight of Godric a seemingly upset fatherlike manner. Quickly the look changed to very business like as they all filed into the room. Jasper would feel aweful later for how much of a fool he'd made out of himself, but for now he was in hunt mode. The urge to kill was strong. This is probably what creepy mundane serial killers feel like he thought to himself as he barely heard Vanessa excuse her from the room. As she left Jasper shot her a quick smile and a wink. As Godric cleared his voice Jasper felt the hairs on his neck stand up. "Ok boys. I'm only sending you two because you work well together. As I saw from our scuffle this morning you two could be parabati..." Jasper looked to Oliver when Godric mentioned parabati to gauge a reaction but had little time as Godric went on, "There have been numerous vampire attacks all over the city. Strangely enough they've all been random. It also seems as though they're not just killing mundanes for food....but just for sheer pleasure." All feeling of happiness had left Jasper at that. He remembered the last time he'd heard the clan killing just for pleasure. It was right before his parents died. The vampire that killed his parents killed his human victims the same way. He slit their throats. "How have they been killed." Jasper said through gritted teeth. The feeling of the predator was cloaking him again. Watching as Godric sighed before continuing, "The one's who weren't drained of blood...had their throats slit." Those words were enough for Jasper. He turned on a dime and stalked towards the door. Godric called after him as he opened the door to the hallway, this time he stopped and said, "Godric it's got to be him. I'm going to fnd him. And I'm going to kill him." With that he turned and headed down the hall hearing Oliver behind him.
Jasper had gone back to his room to put on his shadowhunter gear. All Shadowhunters he had met had the same gear for the most part. Black boots, black pants, black shirts. The only difference Jasper's had that others didn't was a black hood he had stitched onto his shirt himself. He felt it helped keep his hair out of his face on rainy times like this. Finishing lacing up his boots, he launched himself off his bed and out the door to the weapons room where he saw Oliver waiting. He shot his friend a dark smile as they entered the weapon room together. Jasper grabbed two long knives that could've been daggers if the blades were wider. Immediately he etched ruins into them. The ruins looked like long black snakes wrapping around the blades of the knives. When he finished he shoved the kinves into the sheathes on the back of his belt. He also grabbed a sereph blade, usually he'd take more but he hated wasting them on downworlders. He prefered saving them for demons. After grabbing just those weapons, Japser pulled on a pair of black gloves with the with no fingers. As he fastened the left glove he looked up at his friend waiting for the word to go.
